A Hub for Artistic Expression

From October 6 to 10, Ciudad Insurgentes in the municipality of Comondú will host the fourth edition of the International Film Festival of La Toba. This festival aims to bring together cinema, art, culture, academic activities, and training spaces for children, youth, and families. Maribel Collins Sánchez, the Secretary of Tourism and Economy, highlighted the festival's role in fostering artistic expressions within local communities, enhancing cultural identity, and diversifying the tourism offerings in Baja California Sur.

"This meeting represents an opportunity to bring cinematic and artistic expressions closer to communities, strengthen local identity, and diversify the cultural and tourist offerings of Baja California Sur,"

said Collins Sánchez.

The festival is not just a showcase of films; it also serves as a platform for education and community engagement. For the first time, the current administration has allocated resources to support cinematography in Baja California Sur, acknowledging its importance as a cultural expression that promotes destinations, generates opportunities, and contributes to community development.

A Diverse Program of Activities

Enoc Leaño, an actor, founder, and director of the festival, shared insights into the programming for this year's event. The festival will feature prominent figures from various artistic and cultural disciplines, including Joaquín Cosío, Sharina Fong, Óscar Toledano, Llever Aiza, Katy Macías, and Edgar Torres, among others.

"We are excited to bring together such a diverse group of artists and filmmakers who will enrich the festival experience for all attendees,"

Leaño stated.

The programming includes short films from IMCINE, the National Cinematheque, and local, national, and international participants. Additionally, there will be activities aimed at students from preschool to secondary levels, including classical dance for elementary students, puppet shows, a mobile screen, and Barriocinema, which will feature family-friendly screenings in the neighborhoods of La Toba.

Engaging the Community

The festival will also host workshops, academic activities, book presentations, and a temporary gallery featuring the work of Sharina Fong, who will present her artwork, conduct a workshop, and create a mural. Furthermore, the Antology of Tobeña Narrative, a result of the “Ariel Noriega” Narrative Contest, will be presented, alongside a script competition, a temporary museum showcasing the history of the community, and a space dedicated to promoting and selling local and state products.

The activities will kick off at 4:00 PM on October 6 and will conclude on October 10 with a popular dance event. This festival not only highlights the importance of cinema as an art form but also emphasizes its potential to engage and uplift communities through cultural expression and collaboration.
